Therapy

Therapeutic interventions complement students' learning opportunities in the classroom. At Ruru Specialist School we incorporate therapies into the everyday experiences of our students.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapist’s work alongside the student, their whānau, and school staff to overcome any barriers in becoming as independent as possible in their life skills and learning. The occupational therapist carries out appropriate assessments and develops programmes and groups based around student needs and goals. These goals are meaningful to the student and their whānau and are adapted to the needs of the student. Occupational therapists support students in personal cares, hand function and fine motor, play and leisure skills, sensory processing, assistive technology, as well as specialist seating and travel equipment.

Speech Language Therapy

Speech Language Therapy is a therapeutic intervention that supports overall development, specifically communication and swallowing.

At Ruru Specialist School we believe every student has a right to have their voice heard, valued and nurtured, no matter what form it may take.

We advocate a Total Communication Approach whereby a range of modalities are supported including:

  • Speech
  • Vocalisation
  • Facial expression
  • Gesture / Makaton / Sign Language
  • Symbols / Visuals
  • Communication Books
  • Low and high tech communication devices

Some students may come to us with many “tools” in their toolbox and others may come with only a few. The Speech Language Therapist works with students, whanau, and staff to expand and provide access to systems and supports that encourage language growth.

We have three onsite Speech Language Therapists. They work across our base school and satellite classes to provide individual, group, and consultative support.

Physiotherapy

Ruru School contracts a Physiotherapist three days per week. Ruru School also dedicates one support staff member to physio and occupational support. Students are referred through the school process for assessments and programmes. Our physio and Occupational Therapists work closely together.

Music Therapy

Magic room
